Why Board-Level Changes Can Propel a Business

Board-level changes can redefine a company’s strategic direction, bringing fresh perspectives and expertise to drive growth and innovation. These shifts are often pivotal during periods of transformation, mergers or market challenges, aligning leadership with evolving business goals.

Companies make board-level changes to drive performance, introduce skills for emerging opportunities or adapt to external pressures like regulatory changes or shareholder demands. While the transition can be complex, effective integration of new board members can rejuvenate a business and position it for long-term success.

Meet the Team

Managing Director: Todd Gifford
Todd Gifford has been a part of Optimising IT since February 2015, starting as an IT Consultant. Over the years, he has worked his way up to Managing Director. Todd loves the dynamic nature of the business, where no two days are the same. He thrives on coming up with new ideas and new ways to drive the business forward. Outside of work, Todd enjoys spending time with his family and being outdoors.

Non-Executive Director: Charlie Haward
Charlie Haward is a long-standing team member, having been with the company from the beginning as the Service Desk Manager. Now, as a Non-Executive Director focusing on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), Charlie ensures that Optimising IT meets its People and Planet commitments and continuously improves its impact. In her free time, Charlie is an avid runner and serves as an Event Director for the Cheltenham Parkrun.

Non-Executive Director: Dan Taylor
Dan is a chartered accountant and began his career at Grant Thornton, culminating in 5 years as an Advisory Partner. He was subsequently CFO for Ridgeway Group (a multi-franchise motor retailer) and then Vanarama (vehicle finance and leasing), helping to scale both businesses through to their ultimate sale. Dan is now a partner at Alderway Partnership Capital, an investment firm with a focus on UK based entrepreneurial businesses in backbone sectors.

“The great thing about my work is the range of businesses I see, and meeting the people running them. Each one has different opportunities and challenges, and I really enjoy getting under the skin of the business and playing a part in helping them achieve their ambitions”

In his spare time Dan supports his children in their various sporting activities and has over the last few years undertaken several self-build and property renovation projects.

Founder and Non-Executive Director: Gary Smith

Gary Smith founded Optimising IT in 2013 and served as Managing Director until 2023, when Todd took over the role. Gary remains an active non-exec director, passionate about seeing the team grow and welcoming new staff as the company expands. His role is varied, involving strategic planning with the board and management team, client interactions, and supporting automation and business intelligence initiatives. Outside of work, Gary enjoys spending time with his family, running and motor racing.

Non-Executive Director: James Cater

James joins Optimising IT alongside his role as CEO of Fraser Anti-Static Techniques, a leading international Manu-Tech company. With a robust background in leading Sales, Marketing and Business Development teams, James brings a wealth of experience and strategic insight to his new role. In addition to his executive responsibilities, James is deeply involved in the local business and technology community. He serves as the Chair of the Exeter Initiative of Science and Technology (EXIST), Vice Chair of the Exeter Chamber of Commerce, and is a dedicated Business Mentor for Tech South West and SETsquared. Outside of his professional life, James enjoys growing heritage fruit and vegetables and is an avid snowboarder.

“It’s great to have such a dynamic board of directors to guide the way and continue to grow the business. We’re really proud of how far Optimising IT has come over the last 11 years and the success of the business is fundamentally down to the amazing team and the outstanding service they provide to our clients. We are excited to expand our business further over the next few years and with Gary, Charlie, James and Dan alongside me, the future for Optimising IT is looking epic!” – Todd Gifford, Managing Director.
